Clarkesville, GA – North Georgia Technical College’s (NGTC) Towns County Adult Education Center recently awarded its first GED® diploma since reopening the program in fall 2024.
Kiley Shaffer of Hiawassee, Ga., was the recipient of the diploma as she became the first adult education student to complete her coursework at the new location and pass all four GED® tests. Shaffer’s achievement was made possible in part by the HOPE Scholarship, which covered the full cost of the required exams and can be applied toward future college-level coursework.
“I am so proud of Kiley,” said Deanne Oppermann, NGTC adult education instructor. “Not only did she earn her GED, but she is now studying to be a CAN, which will offer her a better career path with higher earnings.”
The adult education program’s reopening has brought much-needed educational opportunities back to Towns County. Free GED® preparation classes are available to any adult seeking to improve their education and career prospects.
Interested individuals may register and begin classes on a drop-in basis Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 2-7:30 p.m. Any individual 16-18 years of age wishing to participate in adult education courses must have a withdraw form from high school and a parent or guardian present to authorize registration.
The NGTC Adult Education Center is located at the Towns County Recreation Center, 900 N. Main St., Hiawassee, Ga. For more information on NGTC Towns County Adult Education, contact Deanne Oppermann at deanne.oppermann@northgatech.edu or 706-970-3101.
