Clarkesville, Ga. – North Georgia Technical College (NGTC) has been named the recipient of the first-ever Embark Georgia Center Campus Partner Award, recognizing a Georgia postsecondary institution that has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to supporting students who have experienced foster care and/or homelessness.

The Embark Georgia Center, part of the J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development at the University of Georgia, was established in 2012 to increase college access and retention for youth who have experienced foster care or homelessness. Directed by Dr. David Myers and Lori Tiller, Embark Georgia has expanded its impact over the past 13 years, connecting colleges, service providers, and community partners through statewide collaboration and leadership initiatives.

NGTC was recognized for its deep, sustained partnership with Embark Georgia, which has resulted in meaningful programs and services for students. Through Embark grants, the college has established a campus food pantry, provided housing support for homeless students between semesters and breaks, and trained Mental Health First Aid instructors to strengthen student well-being.

“We are honored to receive this recognition from Embark Georgia,” said NGTC President John Wilkinson. “North Georgia Tech is committed to helping every student succeed, no matter their background or circumstances. This award reflects the incredible work of our team and our shared belief that education can truly change lives.”

Each Georgia technical college and university has a Designated Point of Contact (DPOC) to assist students within this population. At NGTC, that role is filled by Dr. Fran Chastain, who provides direct support, guidance, and resource coordination.

“It’s inspiring to work alongside Embark Georgia and see firsthand how much difference this partnership makes for students,” said Dr. Chastain. “We’ve made tremendous progress, but there’s always more we can do to ensure these students have the tools and support they need to succeed.”

In 2025, NGTC partnered with Embark Georgia to cohost the Summer Experience Program, welcoming 26 high school students to spend three nights at NGTC, two nights at the University of Georgia, and a day at the University of North Georgia. The program offered hands-on career exploration, college-readiness workshops, and opportunities to connect with mentors, learn about financial aid and student support services, and develop skills for personal and academic success.
