Credentials You Can Earn

The Health Care Assistant certificate of credit programs provide a solid foundation in the fundamental principles for diploma-level Health Science fields at North Georgia Technical College including Practical Nursing, Phlebotomy, Medical Assisting, and more.  Students who enroll in the Health Care Assistant program will choose a specialization or may select one of two tracks to pursue:Student checking another students blood pressure

  • Patient care assistant – for those students interested in careers in nursing. The courses in this track focus on diet and nutrition, interpersonal relations and professional development, legal and ethical concerns in the medical office, and nurse aid fundamentals.
  • Phlebotomy – for those students interested in becoming a certified phlebotomist and an important member of the clinical laboratory team. The courses in this track focus on all types of blood collecting techniques for patient populations throughout the lifespan, processing and preparing other lab specimens, lab test profiles, aseptic and sterile technique, safety and quality assurance both in the classroom and clinical setting.
    The field of technology is fast-growing, and qualified phlebotomists are in high demand. Phlebotomists can work with mobile clinics, laboratories, nursing homes, and hospitals. These courses prepare students to become highly skilled technicians as well as deliver high-quality compassionate care to patients in various settings.

Students who complete the Health Care Assistant certificate and choose the patient care specialization are eligible to sit for the state certification exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). 

North Georgia Technical College offers a wide variety of diploma level health care programs including Phlebotomy, Pharmacy Technology, Emergency Services, Medical Assisting, and Practical Nursing. Program-specific information is available on each of these under the Academic Programs tab.

Program graduates are trained in the underlying fundamentals of health care delivery and are well prepared for employment and subsequent upward mobility.  Classes provide hands-on instruction in vital signs, wound care, venipuncture, and trauma assessment so that the student is prepared to enter specific programs of study in the health care field.

Career Opportunities

Students who complete the Health Care Assistant program have a foundation for diploma-level programs such as:

  • Phlebotomy
  • Medical Assisting
  • Practical Nursing

Students in the Health Care Assistant program receive BLS and First Aid certification.

Students who complete the Health Care Assistant program may sit for the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) exam.

Health Care Assistant graduates may find employment in places such as:

  • Home Health Care or Long-term Care Facilities
  • Hospitals and clinics
  • Medical Laboratories

Haley Adams


Program Director & Instructor

Mrs. Adams received her Medical Laboratory Technology degree from North Georgia Technical College in 2001, she finished her Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Liberty University in 2016 and her Master of Science in Higher Education in 2018. Mrs. Adams is currently working on her Doctor of Education in Higher Education from Capella University. Mrs. Adams was certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician from 2001-2004. She later became certified as a Medical Technologist from 2005-2020. Most recently, she became certified as an MLS in August of 2020. Overall, she has 19 years experience in the lab field, has worked in several local hospitals, and in 2016 became an adjunct instructor for North Georgia Technical College’s Phlebotomy Technician program. She was hired as a full-time instructor for the Clinical Laboratory Technology program in September 2019 and became Program Director in September 2020. Mrs. Adams brings a broad range of experience in Oncology Hematology, Microbiology, and other laboratory departments.

Health Care Science Specialist

Tiffany Scroggs is the front-line contact for information regarding the medical programs as well as the tutoring program at North Georgia Technical College. She has been with NGTC since 2001 and has served in several capacities at the college during her tenure, including the areas of adult literacy, human resources, and economic development. She earned a diploma in Business Office Technology at Lanier Technical College, an associate degree in Administrative Office Technology at North Georgia Technical College, and a bachelor’s degree in Technical Management from DeVry University.
