Credentials You Can Earn
The NGTC photography program has a well-deserved reputation for excellence. Diploma and associate degree programs prepare graduates for employment in the diverse and growing field of photography. Instruction includes camera, multimedia, and digital imaging techniques applied to portraiture, advertising, and photojournalism. Graduates leave with a credential as well as a portfolio of work illustrating their skill.
Each instructor has unique professional experience, and as with most professionals, each has completed assignments in a broad range of specialties. The result is a photography program that gives a solid foundation in the technical, creative and business skills you need to be a professional photographer. NGTC is equipped with a full range of studio equipment and lighting, and supports both Nikon and Canon based camera systems with additional lenses available to loan to students to complete assignments. Students will need to acquire their own digital SLR camera, the essential kit for all who take photography seriously. Overall costs, including all books and equipment, are substantially less than almost any other photography program. The program uses the latest digital imaging software, teaches marketing and business and gives regular field trips. Our building has over 6,000 sq ft of studio space, computer lab, print room, amphitheatre and classrooms.
The photography department at North Georgia Technical College is dedicated to providing skills for a variety of photographic professions including:
- Portraiture: Capture the important moments in our lives. Come and larn posing and composition with the skill of a professional.
- Commercial: Create magazine quality images. Come and learn studio lighting and creative concepts.
- Video: Embrace the video potential of your camera. Come and learn the professional skills of multimedia production.
- Fine Art: Interpret the natural world. come and learn black and white and HDR photography as we capture the grandure of nature.
- Photojournalism: Understand the need to capture reality. Come and lean how to take professional quality images that will stand the test of time.
Courses may include: Visual Theory, Camera Techniques, Photographic Workshop, Digital Imaging, Multimedia, Portraiture, Portfolio, Commercial, Photojournalism, and Photographic Business Management.
The Photography associate degree program prepares students for employment in the diverse and growing field of photography. The Photography associate degree program provides learning opportunities which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. Additionally, the program provides opportunities to upgrade present knowledge and skills or to retrain in the area of photography. Graduates of the program receive a Photography Associate of Applied Science Degree.
The Photography diploma program prepares students for employment in the diverse and growing field of photography. The Photography program provides learning opportunities which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. Additionally, the program provides opportunities to upgrade present knowledge and skills or to retrain in the area of photography. Graduates of the program receive a Photography diploma.
NGTC‘s Photography program offers a certificate for those who want to specialize in a particular area or to refresh the skills they may already have:
- Digital Photographer Certificate
The Photography program may accept Life Work projects on a very limited basis. Please consult with the instructor on a particular project that may be appropriate for Live Work.
Individuals who graduate from NGTC’s Photography program can hit the ground running if they choose to specialize in:
- Portraiture Photography
- Advertising Photography
Graduates of the Photography Technology program may work in a variety of fields including:
- News Reporting
- Public Relations
There are many employment fields that require skills similar to those required to be a photographer, such as:

Meet the Faculty
Jeff Gulle joined the NGTC Photography faculty in 2007 and has more than 20 years of occupational experience. He has a Diploma in Photography and an AAS in Commercial Photography, both from North Georgia Technical College. He also holds a BA in Liberal Studies from Armstrong Atlantic State Unversity. He is a Certified Professional Photographer, a Photographic Craftsman, a Master Photographer, and an active member of the Professional Photographers Association. Jim Loring’s photographic experience spans more than thirty years with over 70 assignments worldwide. In 1987 he covered stories in Romania documenting the impact of Nicolae Ceauşescu’s resettlement policy. This led to opportunities with some of the world’s leading relief and development agencies including Care International, World Vision, Save the Children and Tearfund UK, where he later became photographic editor.
Jim continues to take advantage of photographic opportunities with overseas trips to document Syrian refugees (2014), internally displaced peoples in Mali (2012) and a report back after the earthquake in Nepal (2016). Jim's commercial work includes product, architecture and portrait photography. He has also photographed members of the United Kingdom’s Royal family, a range of celebrities and his personal work includes wildlife and nature photography.
Jim’s teaching experience began in 1997 when he taught photojournalism as part of the BA Journalism program at Surrey Institute of Art & Design in the UK and he joined the NGTC Photography faculty in 2007.
