Credentials You Can Earn
NGTC's cosmetology curriculum meets state licensing requirements of the State Board of Cosmetology. Students receive specialized training in skin, hair, and nail care, as well as reception, sales, and salon management. Graduates who also complete state licensure requirements are employable as a cosmetology salesperson, cosmetologist, salon manager, or salon owner. Students who graduate from the diploma program may continue on to the Associate of Technical Management AAS opening the doors to additional career opportunities that could include platform artist or company education specialists for health and beauty product companies as well as entry-level management positions with corporate hair salons.
The cosmetology diploma program at NGTC goes far beyond the basics of cut and color! From skin and nail care to fundamentals of physiology to experience in salon sales and management, this course of study truly prepares students for careers in the field of cosmetology.
The program emphasizes specialized hands-on training in:
- Safety and sanitation
- State laws, rules, and regulations
- Chemistry, anatomy, and physiology
- Skin, hair, and nail diseases and disorders
- Hairstyling and coloring
- Skin and nail care
- Salon sales and management
- Plus opportunities for live work serving the public in the campus Salon or participating in special events such a Spa Day
Highly qualified instructors with real-world experience want students to fall in love with cosmetology, to complete the program with success and obtain the knowledge to acquire the State Board license. Most of all, they want graduates to have the self-assurance to walk into a salon and go straight to work with confidence.
NGTC’s Cosmetology program is a sequence of courses that prepares students for careers in the field of cosmetology. Learning opportunities develop academic and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The program emphasizes specialized training in safety, sanitation, state laws, rules and regulations, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, skin, hair, and nail diseases and disorders, hair treatments and manipulations, hair shaping, hair styling, artificial hair, braiding/intertwining hair, chemical reformation and application, skin and nail care, hair coloring, hair lightening, reception, sales, management, math, reading, writing, interpersonal relations development, computer skills, employability skills, and work ethics. Program graduates receive a Cosmetology Diploma.
Hair Design Certificate
The Hair Designer certificate is a sequence of courses that prepare students for careers in the field of hair design. Learning opportunities develop academic and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The program emphasizes specialized training in safety, sanitation, state laws, manipulations, hair shaping, hair styling, artificial hair, braiding/intertwining hair, chemical reformation and application, hair coloring, hair lightening, reception, sales, management, and work ethics. The curriculum meets state licensing requirements of the State Board of Cosmetology.
Live Work - Student Performed Services
Live work includes projects which are approved to provide realistic training for students. Students and members of the community may have services rendered in those programs and departments conducting live work. The Cosmetology programs on the Blairsville and Clarkesville Campuses provide Live Work services in the salons on campus as scheduled during semester instruction. Individuals who graduate from NGTC’s Cosmetology programs can hit the floor running if they choose to become:
- Hair Stylist
- Platform artist for hair professional companies
- Company education specialist for hair product companies
Graduates of the Cosmetology Technology program may work in a variety of fields including:
- Health Spa
- Resort and Salon Management
- Technical Education

Meet the Faculty
For many years, Tammy Andrews has balanced salon ownership and instruction. She is now focused solely on educating future cosmetologists. She has a Cosmetology Diploma from North Georgia Technical College and an Associate's Degree from Gainesville State College. With over 30 years as a Salon Owner/Stylist, she also has years of experience as an educator. She began teaching as an adjunct 2001 for both North Georgia Technical College and Lanier Technical College until she accepted a full-time position at NGTC in 2010. Barbara Wheatley has been a Master Cosmetologist for 48 years. She attended Athens Technical College where she received an Associate's Degree in Personal Services, and was a Cosmetology adjunct for several years. Barbara joined the North Georgia Technical College faculty full-time in 2014. She has a Cosmetology instructor license and attends the University of Georgia pursing a degree in Occupational Studies. She has owned her own salon for 38 years. Mrs. Wheatley brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to her students. Contact: email@example.com
After more than five years as an adjunct instructor, Lindsay Adams joined North Georgia Technical College as a full-time Cosmetology instructor in 2017. Lindsay has a Cosmetology diploma from NGTC and ten years of experience in the salon. She began her studies at Stephens County High School, where she competed in SkillsUSA and placed second in the state competition for Nail Care. Since graduation from high school, she has remained active serving on the advisory committee for the Stephens County High School cosmetology department.
